Plivo integration: design and pilot guide

A worked scenario, illustrated decision review and a practical pilot worksheet.

Plivo voice integration needs a call-and-stream contract

A Plivo AI voice agent integration should define how the call reaches the voice service, how audio travels in both directions and how call events become one business outcome. Copying another provider's stream protocol or callback labels can produce a connected but unusable call.

Evaluate Fonix.AI on the supported Plivo configuration and a controlled number. Account capabilities, stream mode, codec and transfer behaviour need confirmation for that deployment; this guide describes the review rather than claiming a universal native connector.

Keep answer instructions and media events distinct

Plivo's audio streaming reference documents streaming through its voice XML and WebSocket path. Validate the chosen mode and message format against that reference. The endpoint returning call instructions and the endpoint handling media have different security and availability responsibilities.

Map the provider call reference, stream reference where present, agent session and business task. Preserve inbound/outbound direction and any transfer leg. A final state on one leg should not silently replace the state of another.

Illustrative plivo integration example: caller leg: Customer disconnects; business system: Booking response still pending; reconciliation: Find whether the original action committed; next step: Retain reference and approved follow-up policy.

Worked example: the caller hangs up during a tool action

A fictional caller requests a booking and disconnects while the business system is responding. The telephony session should close, but the action still needs reconciliation. If the booking succeeded, retain its reference and follow the approved notification policy. Do not retry blindly because the phone call ended before the agent spoke.

Design cleanup and bounded recovery

Release stream and agent resources on the appropriate termination events. Handle duplicated callbacks without duplicating a summary or follow-up. If the media path fails while the call is active, use the supported fallback rather than leaving silent audio indefinitely.

Validate incoming provider requests using the supported controls and keep credentials private. Diagnostic captures should be restricted and sanitised because they can contain phone numbers and audio. Record enough identifiers to reconcile a failure without publishing raw call data.

Plivo review checks protocol compatibility, event identity, resource cleanup and pending action reconciliation.

A Plivo hangup-and-action reconciliation test

Use a controlled Plivo route and the documented stream configuration for the account. Define call/session correlation and authorised cleanup behaviour. Prepare a synthetic tool action whose accepted response can be delayed.

Pilot caseRequired behaviour
The caller disconnects after a booking request is sentClose media resources but reconcile the accepted or unknown booking result.
A stream failure leaves the call activeExecute the supported operational fallback instead of leaving silence.
A completion callback is repeatedRetain one summary and one intended follow-up action.

Report call, stream and business-action outcomes separately, including unknown writes. Check residual resources after hangup and duplicate follow-ups after replay. A failed conversation can still contain a successfully committed action that needs an owned next step.

Should a hangup automatically cancel or repeat a tool action?

Neither should be assumed. Check whether the external system accepted the request and apply its authorised cancellation or reconciliation process. Retrying blindly can create a second booking; claiming cancellation can hide an action that already committed.

Test the edge between audio and business state

Run two-way speech, interruption, stream failure, caller hangup and a repeated callback. Inspect the final call, session and transaction records together. Count unresolved actions separately from failed calls.

Review a Plivo voice path with your supported stream configuration. Function reliability covers unknown writes; latency measurement covers the full media experience. Official reference checked 15 October 2026.

Your demo checklist

  • The caller disconnects after a booking request is sent
  • A stream failure leaves the call active
  • A completion callback is repeated
  • Verify the accepted result in the business system

Specific integrations and deployment requirements are confirmed with your team.
